RotoRooter promised 11am-2pm, still no show at 6pm

Don't use RotoRooter, do yourself a favor. Called at 8:30 am this morning, was told someone could be out between 11 and 2. No one showed. Calls to and from customer service resulted in statements that 'a technician is not available yet' and 'I don't have any eta'. They could not even tell me how many customers were before me. It's now 6:08 and still no one. I cancelled and have called a local plumber I have used before. Boo RotoRooter. If you are backed up, just tell me when I first call so I don't wait ALL DAY for you. Be honest and don't tell me a time frame if you have no chance of meeting it. 2 thumbs down. Will NEVER use RotoRooter.

Incompetent thieves

This Roto Rooter ripped off my 83 year old mother. Their tech showed up at 9:00 am. He needed to snake/scope the lines but could not immediately locate the clean out in our backyard. He claimed he did not have the time to go pull the city map and locate it so he would have to scope/snake from the roof-top vent. To do this, he would need an extra "spool" that he had to return to the shop to retrieve. For that, my mom was charged $210!!!!! What serviceman ever charges to return to the shop for the proper tools he needs in order to finish the job for which he was hired?! Furthermore, it was his CHOICE to go get the spool for which he, curiously, had the time. At 3:30 that afternoon, he proclaimed the job "finished" and the lines to be free of roots. (Ha! We had to hire another plumber who came out and within 30 minutes was able to scope the lines - and what do you know! - there were roots!) The bottom line is this: We were charged a total of $538 for nothing. Again, $210 of that was because their service tech was too lazy to do his job correctly. Oh and corporate would not help. Their claim was that each Roto Rooter is an independent franchise and the relationship is that of franchisor/franchisee; they do not get involved in disputes. Check out their Facebook page, though, and watch them accept any praise offered, DO NOT USE THIS ROTO ROOTER!!!!!

I don't know how you paid the guy, but if by cheque or credit card, I would stop payment on the check and dispute the charge with your credit card company for services not received. And, of course, tell everyone you can about this company.

Unfortunately, my mom paid them. I didn't learn of this until too long after the fact. I tried to talk with Roto Rooter but as I did not actually sign the check (but I do live here), they wouldn't speak with me.

Believe me, I am posting this everywhere I can!

Lie after lie....SCAM ARTIST

I called roto-rooter to my home jan. 2013 for my down stairs toilet not flushing right. They sent out a service tech. and he was here for an 1hr. The Tech. told me after an hr. that his machine wasn't powerful enough to clean my drain, so he was going to have another tech. come out with a industrial size machine. When the 2nd tech arrived a 1/2 hr. later he was running his machine for about a half hr. and comes and gets me to show me theres a break in my line about 10ft. before the street. He wrote me a quote for $3800 to replace a 4 foot section. I told him i would talk it over with my wife before i go forward with the repair, but really I was putting it off to get another quote from a another plumber...Reason being is I had roto-rooter out about year and half prior to clean out same toilet and there was no problems. To make a long story short the other plumber I had come out ran his camera through my drain and there were no breaks in my line... This company has BAD BUSINESS PRACTICE. It's so sad how many people they must take advantage of...They would have put us out of $3800 for nothing... The plumber I had told me roto-rooter is known for this...I asked my plumber what if I took off from work to watch them make the repair, and saw that when they were digging that my line wasn't actually broke...He made a good point to me...He said "If I was standing watching they would intentionally brake the line with the backhoe"!! Watch out for roto-rooter after investigating them I noticed they had a class action lawsuit against them for not being honest about repairs that didn't need to be repaired!!!

ROTO ROOTER CHECK FRAUD

Recently we had our septic cleaned out. We were told it would only cost a certain amount, but yet it ended up costing my mother twice the amount she was originally told.

WELL here is the worst part they cashed a post dated check 1 month before it was date for. Now it has put my parents in a financial bind with their bills. I am going to see about getting the check pulled from the bank to see if the check has been altered in anyway. What the idiots don't realize is my mom's check book is the carbon copy type.

So she has a copy of everything she wrote on the check date and all. If it comes back that the date was altered then Roto Rooter will be facing FEDERAL BANK FRAUD charges.

It's not Roto Rooter's fault it's the their banks. If the check is post dated it shouldn't have been deposited.

Guest

Forget it. New rules......Date isn't considered. If you write a check you better have the funds to cover it. I Agree with other comment. When you have a service., the company won't wait a month for payment without something in writing. Really???? What were you thinking??

It's never something thats Planned when you have a back up. Cleaning and pumping a septic unless your mom had an issue shouldn't have caused a quote change Your parents probably had tile drain issues

Courtnie Vei

Post-dating a check means nothing. A computer scans the checks and the date isn't even considered.

Was a post-dated check part of the agreement? Is there anything in writing about not cashing the check until later?

Never again...

I've dealt with Roto-Rooter Plumbing three times now with varying degrees of efficiency. The first time was approximately 7 months ago with a faulty bathroom sink. The gentleman who came was on time, experienced, friendly, and even taught me a thing or two. It was a little expensive, but he got the job done! With such a pleasant first experience, I decided to call them when we had a problem with our sump pump. The gentleman showed up on time; however, looked at our sump pump and said that it appeared to be working just fine to him. He charged me and walked out of my house within 5 minutes. Needless to say, our basement flooded (not terribly but still...) and our pump had to be replaced the following week. Lastly, I'm sitting here today.... waiting... and waiting... for someone just to show up. We have been having problems with our water heater for about a week and figured it was time to have someone look at it. I was hoping that my second experience was just a fluke and that they would be as good as the first time I called them for help... but I'm start to doubt that. I called for an appointment yesterday morning and set a time from 1:00-3:00pm yesterday. I even took off work early so that this could get finished. They called around 2:45 and said they were running about 3 hours behind. To make a long story short, they were still running hours behind at 7:00pm last night... so, they told us that they could be at our house first thing in the morning.... between 10:00-12:00... I was a little annoyed but whatever.. it needs fixed. Anyway, it is currently 2:30pm... my Saturday plans ruined... and them calling every hour saying it is just going to be another hour. I understand that ours isn't considered an emergency... but at the same time, I wish they would just be honest about how long it is going to be... I've had to cancel two sets of plans as well as taking time off of work just to wait on them. Our original appointment was over 24 hours ago. I won't be calling them next time.

Over charged repair that could have been permanently fixed for same cost

Last year I had a leak at the water meter. The city determined it was on my side of the meter so I called Roto Rooter. They charged $1500 to repair a 16 inch section of poly pipe. The tech did have to go into the concrete of the driveway. I thought they would break out a section but only took out a small patch perhaps 15 x3 inches, then did a patch job. Awful expensive for a 1 1/2 hour job. I expected at least 4 hours. Have a new leak this week further up and the plumber(not RR) quoted $1400 to replace the entire line up to the house. Wonder why RR couldn't do the same? Worst part was RR showed up with a hammer drill. He had to go get a mini jack hammer to break the concrete.

Water Valve - continuous leak - they put job on hold - wanted to charge $400 - sign "hold harmless" agreement

Unbelievable. I had a water valve typically used to turn water off to house non-stop leaking.

I called Roto Rooter. At 9:30 pm, tech comes and informs me I will have to continue to let water leak (meant staying up through the night since very large bucket was collecting water at a rate of emptying every hour). He said the reason was if he used the shut off valve provided by Phila. Water Dept.

and it malfunctions, I could have water flooding my basement. I asked for an estimate - depending on parts - would cost $200-$350. I though the price was outrageous but said fine. Tech comes 9:30 am next next morning.

He flips the PWD valve closed (no problem) and informs my family cost would be $400 AND HE WOUD NOT PROCEED WITHOUT ME SIGNING "HOLD HARMLESS" AGREEMENT. He was installing a 1/2" stem valve for $400! Asked to sign a "HOLD HARMLESS" agreement but their work is guaranteed - how so????????? And on top of that, guy was outright strange and would not give me an estimate as to how long the job might take, refused to say minimum or maximum range.

Before proceeding I went to a different room and called Roto Rooter. They had nothing to say about the strangeness of the person but they sure did stand behind their "HOLD HARMLESS" agreement.

CONCLUSION - I did not give them the job. I just had it completed for $75.

Roto Rooter is an incompetent rip off

I had Roto Rooter come out and replace my water heater. It was Friday afternoon, so I failed to get another estimate, because i didn't want to go without hot water all weekend. The heater started leaking almost immediately, so I had them come out again, but of course it wasn't leaking that day, so they didn't do anything. Then a valve at the front of the house started leaking. We were already dissatisfied with them, so we called another plumber, who told us we had a pressure problem, which Roto Rooter should've told us about, and that we needed an expansion tank. They also told us they would've charged less than a third of what Roto Rooter charged for the water heater. I called Roto Rooter to fix the problem, but they said we needed a new pressure regulator, not an expansion tank. Meanwhile the toilet started spewing water constantly and the front valve continued to leak. The latest development is that a pipe has sprung a leak. I do not want Roto Rooter to come back to my house ever, even to fix what they messed up, so I am having the other plumber take care of it. I estimate a loss of $5000 with all the wasted water. This doesn't even include the cost of fixing the broken pipe.

Another almost victim

Updated by user Mar 21, 2013

3/21/13 RR has withdrawn the invoice to my credit card for $378 so I ended up with no monetary loss.

Original review Mar 19, 2013
In Feb 2011 I hired Roto-rooter (RR) to replace the main drain from my house to the curb for $5500 so I have a history with the company. On 3/18/13 I called RR in Dayton OH because my floor drain in the basement had "burped" over the weekend. Tech supervisor Josh Lawson arrived within the hour to give me an estimate for the work. He gave me an estimate of $239 to clean the main drain, another $239 to clean the floor drain, and $379 to camera the drain. When I balked at the cost which was more than 4 times what I had previously paid for the same service, he agreed to do the camera at no cost and wrote FREE on that line of the estimate plus gave me $100 discount, resulting in a final estimate of $378. I did not see him bring a camera into the house but shortly after he showed me a disc which he said was the result of the camera in the drain. I have no proof that this was a disc of my drain or someone else's or even if there was anything on the disc. When a camera was used in the drain 2 years ago prior to the drain replacement, the technician had me witness the camera in action. Lawson said the pictures indicated that there was a rootball just over the curb, that my drain pipe was sitting 2" below the opening in the main drain, and these were both my responsibility, not the city's. He said I could either have the city dig up the street to repair it, at a probable cost of $12,000, or I could agree to have RR use their exclusive inversion method to put a liner in the drain to cover the 11 feet from the end of the previously replaced drain pipe to the city main. (Remember, the previous repair covered the drain from the house to the curb.) He was not able to give me a price on this until he spoke to his supervisor. He went outside to use his phone and when he came back inside, he told me it would be $5200 but they were willing to reduce this to $4300. While he was outside I placed a call to the city of Dayton sewer department and requested they camera the main drain in front of my house. I told him $4300 was outrageous and that I was not interested. He then told me that I'd then have to pay him the $378 he had estimated for the drain cleaning. At this point I was so aggravated that it didn't dawn on me that he still had not cleaned the drains. Rather than pay him $378 for absolutely nothing, I agreed to authorize the $4300 repair. Granted it was downright *** but by that time I was worn down to a frazzle. Lawson then balled up all copies of the original estimate, and gave it to me to put in the trashcan. He then wrote up the authorization for the drainpipe liner and, like a lamb led to slaughter, I signed it. He scheduled the inversion for a week later, 3/25/13. Within the hour, I came to my senses, thanks to a helpful neighbor, and called Lawson on his cell phone and told him I had changed my mind and wanted to cancel the work. I then called the local RR office and asked if they required written notification of the cancellation and was told they did not. Next I called my credit card company and told them to disallow any charges that came in from RR for services on 3/18/13. I also called the local RR back and told them not to submit any charges because no work had been done and that the credit card company had been so advised. I was assured that no charges would be submitted. On 3/19/13 the city of Dayton sewer department arrived to take pictures of the drain. The pictures show a rootball in my lateral which proves the drain was not cleaned yesterday. It also shows that the main and the connection are okay. More interesting is that although Lawson's statement of work for the inversion stated that 11 ft of liner were required, the distance from the curb to the city main is 4 ft, not 11 ft. I also checked with my credit card company and RR submitted charges of $378 today for work done yesterday. I have disputed the claim. I feel that RR uses deceptive practices to alarm the customer, using exaggerated results for failure to act immediately then insisting that payment of some kind is made even when no work has been done. Lawson admitted to me that if he goes into a house, some kind of payment has to be made or he gets into trouble. This is despite their advertising free estimates. When Lawson told me that I'd have to pay the $378 before he left if I didn't decide to authorize the $4300, I told him that was pressuring me. I told him that prevented me from getting a second opinion on whether the work was actually required. That was when he explained to me that some kind of payment was required. I am elderly and retired and I feel Lawson attempted to take advantage of that by scaring me into unnecessary overpriced work. At this point, I would not hire RR to clean out my kitty litter box and I have warned everyone I know to steer clear of them. After finding this web-site last night, I made up my mind to submit a complaint to keep others from falling victim to their fraudulent methods. RR has learned that if they tell someone it is not safe to use the plumbing until repairs are made and RR is able to make those repairs almost immediately while it will take competitors days or weeks to secure permits which RR have readily available, the already stressed customer will probably take the easiest, although most expensive, solution. RR obviously lacks corporate ethics. I also find it interesting that Lawson is named in other complaints in the Dayton area. Apparently the negative publicity has not adversely affected his standing with the company--quite the opposite. Interesting!

Ripped off my father

Roto "rip off" rooter did just that to my elderly father. They charged him $415 to repair a sink drain leak and used a snake! Gave him one gallon of their drain cleaner for "free!" Free? He paid an arm and a leg for it. This company is a rip off!!!! They didn't even offer him a senior discount or the coupon discount readily available on their website. The other thing was that the plumber was mad about how much he had to charge my Dad for this service. Really????? Then why did he do it? He explained to my dad that it was the company that had to charge him. I can't tell you how angry I am and how sad I am that this company is doing this to elderly people. I will be filing a BBB complaint. I wished he would have called the hometown plumber. Based on other reviews about Roto Rooter all over the net, people need to heed the advice given. Run! DO NOT EVER USE THIS COMPANY!!!

One final follow up. Two weeks ago, my father went to use his dishwasher only to find that they did not hook it up as they were suppose to.

He woke up to dirty dishes because water never got into the dishwasher. While they did reduce the bill by 75%, the remainder ended up being written off after I let them know that the job was not complete.

We've used Roto-Rooter for years. Your review sounds fishy because Roto-Rooter always provides an upfront estimate before they start working.

Your dad had to agree to the price and sign a work order before they'd do the job. If he's that "elderly" that he can't compute a price, maybe you shouldn't leave him home alone. They may not be the cheapest in town but they follow all the codes, come out within an hour or two of your call and you know where to find them if warranty work is ever needed.

Meanwhile, the cheap, unlicensed and uninsured handyman down the street screwed up your plumbing then left town without a forwarding address or phone number and you're holding the bag. :sigh

@Fritz. I'm glad that you are confident in your assessment of other people's competence when it comes to deciding how much is too much and that you knowingly enjoy paying more for their services. Roto-Rooter is right for you. Perhaps you have extra cash to do so. You also seem confident in assessing one's capability to be left alone. Heaven help you should you live that long. We never know what we will face or the predicament we will be in at any given time. As far as presenting the price, not in this case. As far as cheap, unlicensed plumbers down the street, yes. But in a small town, people know people and honor and trust exists and people do operate this way. One trip to the barber shop and one knows who not to use. So, he should have called someone local, but Roto-Rooter's ad was so big and in his face, that's the number he ignorantly called.

Regarding them being "not the cheapest" in town, that is true. We're not buying a Mercedes here. After calling 5 other plumbers in his area and asking how much it costs to snake a drain, the cost was $100 on average. Roto-Rooter's cost, $265. And even calling Roto-Rooter again would not yield pricing over the phone. That's fishy. All the others obliged. The bill said they used parts and they did not. My father watched them wash them off and put them back plus two washers (about $1.00 each). The average plumber charges between $68-$98/hour + parts. Again, they logged two hours here. $415? "Not the cheapest.... but criminal." And my father plumbed that sink and all of the toilets in the house. At a certain point in your life, you cannot maneuver yourself to make repairs of any kind and you might need help. And when you have water on your floor, you might be stuck saying - fix it because you're here now and you'll charge me a decent price.

Here is the final thing that should tell you he was ripped off. The guy "gave" him a gallon of drain cleaner because of the price he had to charge. When I called Roto-Rooter, they said the price of it on his bill was $54 (from their computer.) It was not line itemed out on my father's bill. Is that honest? Had they said, "We have this drain cleaner for $54, would you like it?" I assure you that he would have said no!

Our "technician" - conviently opened the bottle to "show me" how to use the cleaner. I asked how much and said "no thanks".

I was told too bad it was open so I had to buy it.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY

We called Roto Rooter to come rod the drain in our tub (we have had this done before by another plumber) My husband called to set the appointment and asked what the charge would be for rodding the drain and the person would not give him a price only said every plumber has their own charge. We figured they couldn't charge much more then $100 like previous plumbers had charged us, the $40 off coupon also was part of the reason we decided to try Roto Rooters. The "plumber" came two hours AFTER they called and said it would be 30-45 mins. He came in very unprofessional, never introduced himself, dressed in all black baggy clothes complete with a baseball cap. I showed him to the bathroom and showed him the tub that was clogged and told him it needed to be rodded we have had this done before and knew what the problem was. He insisted on going into our basement to look at our pipes. He went down for 5 mins and came up and said he will go write up an estimate. My mother-in-law then asked him what the charge would be he said "the standard charge of $398" we both said no way would we pay that since we had been charged $100 in the past He then said he will do it as a side job for $200 we still said no. He got very angry and said he drove 2 hrs all this way and he cant leave with nothing. He stood in the dinning room repeating he cant leave with nothing for a minute or so. At that point I actually became afraid having him in the house, it wasn't normal to have someone acting like he was. I would defiantly recommend to NEVER use this company. I wish I did my research BEFORE calling them. I found out these people are not even licensed plumbers. Had I known prior to even thinking about calling them they weren't even licensed plumbers I never would have had my husband call them what a joke that this company still even exists. Its actually kind of scary the people they hire as employees to go into peoples homes. Its unfortunate to read that other people have been scammed by this company and I hope this complaint will stop someone from calling this company.

Roto Rooter--A Close Call...

Have a clogged drain in my kitchen. Called Roto Rooter today for an estimate and was told they don't like to commit to a job unseen (fair enough), but that they'd send a tech out to provide a "free estimate with no obligation". Tech arrived on time and was polite enough at first. But it rapidly became apparent that the "free estimate" is just a line to get them in your door for a sales call. He quoted a $300 flat fee after looking at the sink pipe for about 10 seconds...oh, and he'd do us a big favor and throw in some of their snazzy drain cleaner. After telling us how quickly he could get it done and what a cinch it'd be (so why am I paying you $300?), I pulled my partner aside to confer. We agreed it seemed high and that we'd go with the hourly fee, licensed actual plumber we'd also called. After telling him thanks, but no thanks, the price immediately dropped to $225 and no drain cleaner. (Apparently, a gallon of that costs $75.) He did not want to take no for an answer and continued to try to hard sell us. When I made it quite clear we were done, he got testy and sarcastically "wished us luck" and whined about being on commission. BTW, I've worked on commission and, believe me, whining about how you need to make a sale will not get you one! Plus, he was still trying to sell us on his way out... By this time, I'd've paid him $300 just to get out of my house! So much for "no obligation". I absolutely knew we made the right decision to go elsewhere, only confirmed by reading a sampling of the similar experiences on this page. In fact, I don't care if it ends up costing me more than $300, it's worth it not to do business with this snakeoil company. But I think my experience with writing a complaint directly to the company on their website says it all: On their Contact Us page, there's an 800 number for their "Employee Theft and Fraud" hotline. 'Nuff said.

Ripoff Rooter

About every 18 months I get a grease clog at the end of the drain that leads into the septic tank. I've called a number of drain opening companies over the years. The come; they're here for less than an hour; it costs around $200 -- too much, but this seems to be the going rate. This time we called Roto-Rooter. We called around 9; they said they would come between 11:00 and 1:30. They show up about 2:00. The guy tells me the charge will be $395. I complain that is much more than I've ever paid. He says it's the going rate but he can offer me 10% off; no more. Once he gets into the job, he tells me he has to remove a toilet. Now it will be $490. He finished and cleaned up and packed up and was completely done in an hour (just like all the other drain services). When he presents the bill I say I want to talk to a manager before I pay him. He offers me a 15% discount, his final offer. I tell him I want to speak to a manager. He curses at me and leaves. He tells me I've done a terrible thing -- as if it's perfectly okay to charge an hourly fee a lawyer, a doctor, an electrician, a carpenter, an auto mechanic etc. wouldn't have the nerve to ask for. Well, maybe the lawyer would, but that's another story! So he leaves and the manager calls. He goes back to the $395 and implies ever dollar he cuts comes straight out of the worker's pocket since the company always keeps it's share. I agreed to the $395 but that's still twice as much as anyone else would charge. What a bunch of flim-flam! Their fixed prices are fixed only until you squeal. I guarantee I'll never call Roto-rooter again, at least not in the New York area. Maybe they're more honest in some other part of the country.

Pay full price and nothing accomplished

My main sewer waste line had backed up into my basement bath tub and into my toilet onto the bathroom floor. I called Roto rooter and they came out within the two hour time frame stated. The technician 'cabled' the main drain to two hundred feet and could not 'fix' the problem. He gave no explanation other than I would need to have a camera passed through it in order to determine the problem. He set up an appointment for the camera person to come out for that afternoon. The first technician charged me $383.00 for the work he had done. I told him that nothing was resolved and it was not an appropriate charge. He did not want to make changes to his bill. He was paid the full amount. The second Technician (camera) told me he would need to dig up my yard to assess the problem. He would dig a 10x8 foot hole 9 feet deep, separate the drain line, 'jet-it' and send a camera down to reassess. The quote for this was $5,200.00 and nothing was promised other than they would pass a new liner through the drain for a mere $115.00 per foot! (200 feet x 115+ $23,000.00. $23,000.00 + 5,200.00 = $28,200.00 total charge. Plus the $383.00 I had already paid.) I told him that that was too expensive, way out of line and inappropriate. I called another company and they cleared my may drain, from inside the house, by passing a 'jet' then camera 280 feet. They charged my $300.00. I will never recommend Roto-Rooter to anyone!

Lack of coordination

For two consecutive days, they've had me waiting around because they can't seem to get on synch, waiting on a piece of equipment from here and there, and there's no productive outcome. This has a very painful experience for my family and myself, i wouldn't recommend their services!! Their system is very flawed, they have some work to do, anyone in costumer service needs to be prompt, and there's nothing prompt about their service. Expensive and unreliable, are the two operative words to describe their services!! Anyone planning on using their services in the future, should consider other options first, and always!!
